Tamil Tigers `waging stealth war` - 7 more soldiers dead

Sri Lanka`s government has accused Tamil Tiger rebels of waging a `stealth war` after a mine attack in the north killed at least seven soldiers.
The Jaffna blast followed another on Sunday in which seven troops also died.
The government said the rebels were trying to provoke a confrontation, but promised to act with restraint.
The rebels have denied carrying out the latest attack, which came as a new army chief took up his post in Sri Lanka. He vowed to take on terrorism.
The BBC`s Dumeetha Luthra in Jaffna says the mood in the area is tense and more troops have been deployed amid fears war may return.
In the island`s east, at least three breakaway rebels were killed in what appeared to be part of a continuing internal feud, military officials said.
Rebel denial
Tuesday`s attack near a Hindu temple on the outskirts of Jaffna, 300km (185 miles) from Colombo, brings to 17 the number of soldiers the army says have been killed in the north since Friday.
The troops had been on a foot patrol clearing the road and they were returning in a tractor when they were ambushed with a claymore mine,` said Defence Ministry spokesman Brigadier Nalin Witharanage.
Police said two devices exploded. Three Swiss nationals passing in a car were also injured.
Claymore mines carry a small charge packed behind hundreds of steel balls which shoot forward on detonation.
Although the rebels are in charge of parts of Sri Lanka`s north and east, Jaffna is controlled by the army.
The Tamil Tigers said they had nothing to do with Tuesday`s attack.
`We are not going to break the ceasefire agreement,` rebel spokesman Daya Master told Reuters.
New army commander Lt-Gen Sarath Fonseka was not so sure: `If they did not do it, who else could have done it?
`We are ready for any situation... we have not dropped our guard,` he told his first news conference.
But he also said he wanted the two sides to talk to `ensure the peace process does not collapse`.
There has been no direct contact between the army and the rebels for several months.
What would have been the first meeting since hardliner Mahinda Rajapakse was elected Sri Lankan president last month failed to take place on Monday.
Tensions rising
Violence over the last few days is the worst since a ceasefire was agreed between the government and the rebels in February 2002, truce monitors say.
The United States has added its voice to the chorus of concern, blaming the rebels for Sunday`s mine attack. A statement called on both sides `to take immediate action to prevent violence and to uphold the terms of the ceasefire agreement`.
Tensions have been rising since Mr Rajapakse was elected.
He has ruled out a separate homeland for minority Tamils in the north and east and wants to renegotiate the truce which ended more than 20 years of civil war in which more than 60,000 people died.
The Tamil Tigers are demanding a political settlement next year - or they say they will step up their struggle.

| This is a grave situation indeed. I can only hope that Mahinda has the brain to quickly engage LTTE in the peace process and bring them to the negotiating table. Whether he likes it or not that is the only way out! |

Mahinda escaped by Constitution Route??
Presidential immunity sinks 'Helping Hambantota' probe
(Dec 5, 3.00 pm) The Bribery and Corruption Commission is to seek legal advice from the Attorney General regarding further investigations into the 'Helping Hambantoa' account, where President Mahinda Rajapaksa, while serving as Prime Minister is alleged to have credited 82 million rupees that were donated to the Tsunami Relief Fund to a personal bank account.
The Commission launched a preliminary investigation into the alleged fraud on a complaint lodged by UNP parliamentarian Kabir Hashim. This investigation was conducted on the instructions of the Attorney General.
During the presidential election campaign, the CID submitted a report to the Court and the Court ordered the CID to conduct further investigations and submit a report on the investigations. However filing a petition in the Supreme Court, Rajapaksa prayed for a stay order to halt the investigations claiming that his fundamental rights had been violated by the investigations. After examining the petition, a bench headed by Chief Justice Sarath N Silva ordered the suspension of the investigations until January.
After the Supreme court order, Deputy Inspector General in charge of the CID, Lionel Gunathilake filed an affidavit to the court and stated that upon the inspection of the bank accounts and the relevant documents, it is evident that the funds in the account had been misused resulting in a criminal breach of trust.
When the compliant was taken up for hearing, Mahinda Rajapaksa was serving as Prime Minister, but now he is the Executive President of the country. Under the constitution legal action cannot be constituted against the President. Not just the incumbent President even the retired presidents enjoy this legal immunity.
When 'Lanka e News' queried about the issue from the Chairman of the Bribery or Corruption Commission, Amir Ismail, he said the commission would seen a determination from the Supreme court whether they can proceed with the case.

SLA uses paramilitaries and their own intelligent personnel to kill unarmed political LTTEs and innocent Tamils, which is a serious violation of CFA. Each time a Tamil been killed in areas under SLA control, they were saying they got nothing to do with it.
Now the Tamil People Force started to take revenge on SLA within the same areas they control & will continue for indefinitely. LTTE said they got nothing to do with the killing.
Only way to stop this, first SLA must stop using paramilitary killing and disarm them as required under CFA and then LTTE will try to stop the PEOPLE FORCE killing more SLA. Edited By - elara - 6 Dec 2005 18:34:02 GMT |

Last week, I heard in this forum that plane loads of JVPers are heading for Jaffna from all over the world. Does anyone know if they are there yet , or are they still in mid -air??? :) :)
On a more serious note - my deepest sympathies to the families of those 7 soldiers. With in the last 3 days almost 15 people have been killed. Its all poor sinhala village boys- like in all cases, those who want war never go and fights. Its always the poor Sinhala, tamil and muslim boys who die.
I sincerely hope this time IF there is all out war, many senior leaders of the JVP, LTTE, TNA, JHU and Mahindas crony group will blown to pieces! PIECES beause these people dont deserved to be given a proper and complete funeral.... Edited By - anizam - 6 Dec 2005 16:46:10 GMT |

| Sri lankan government should help LTTE to track down those karuna culprits to pave the way for a durable peace. This is entirely left to the SLA to arrest those Karuna groupes or participate with LTTE forces to wipe out those remaing para military groups and including that culprit Karuna- |

'Srilankan govenment is trying to start the wa by killing its troops'
Do you think people are so dump to believe this type of crap stories? Why SLA should kill their soldiers?? It is the LTTE who kill their people and pass the blame on SLA. CFA is a piece of paper today, nobody follow it and Tigers won't stop their killing. Why should not SLA reply the same way? Becuase they are committed to peace and apply different strategies. Tigers created Karuna and gave to SLA. He will do the job. Edited By - newbie - 6 Dec 2005 17:01:29 GMT |
