This is the fundemental problem we have in our country now, and what led our country to become closer to Somalia.
Do you see any other religiuos leaders present? Top of that buddhism strickly prohibits monks to be in politics.
If they want to built a country why can't they educate the people first. Fix the fundamental problem. Most of the so called buddhists have no clue what's buddhism and the teachings. I think govt and religion should be seperate.
Most you all you claim that SL is a multi ethenic country which respects other reliongs and cultures, i think it's B.S, you can clearly see the role given to other religions here. |

In order to fully understand the noble truths and investigate whether they were in fact true, Buddha recommended that a certain lifestyle or path be followed which consists of:
1. Right Understanding
2. Right Thought
3. Right Speech
4. Right Action
5. Right Livelihood
6. Right Effort
7. Right Mindfulness
8. Right Concentration
i don't think non of these monks follow any of these paths. |

Tigress,
None of those monks are in the Army. A deserter can't be an MP.
The government doesn't want war, but if the LTTE declares war again, Sri Lanka has a territorial Army, a Naval force and an Air Force to fight with, the capacity exceeds 150000, the monks don't ned to be there. |

Lanka71,
You seem to have got all wrong. Buddhist monks are not prohibited from taking up responsible positions. Also, they have been the force behind most of the enemy invasions throughout the history. They are morally entitled for the job.
Remember, their party was called something else, but the laymen dragged the monks into the scene as the guys knew, the monks voice is always heard.
Now, Hakeem, Thondaman and even Prabhakaran can do the same by bringing forth their religious leaders to speak to the top man, but if they do so, that will be detrimental to their political/military career. Hence keep away exhibiting their power, when it matters.
It is not the monks but the other religious leaders who are wrong. They should declare their honesty and take the matters up with the government. For example, Christian priests are never interested in anything related Sri Lanka, except Cricket.
They are in a different planet. Even the Rev chief father Marcus Fernando was issueing strange statements before the elections that were demaging to Mahinda. The revered ones of any religion are given all the due respect and they can always make their views known to the leaders. Buddhist monks never do anything to suppress them, they can't do anything either. However, the other preists never do so, may be they are not interested in politics, but if the country is in the wrong foot, there is nothing wrong if the reverened ones make an effort to rectify the leaders. Istead most of them play underhand political games. Buddhist monks are just being honest in declaring their position. |

I have a question to every one here and im asking this cos i honestly dont know the answere. i come from two religous back grounds and i dont know much about either.
When a monk sits with a lay men is the monk always expected to sit at a higher position. i see that in some pictures but not in others. Now this one obviously they are sitting at the same level. Also, why are all the monks sitting on one side and then the lay men on the other side? if that a requirment, then can the monks sit on the same table which is headed by a lay man (in this case Mahinda)..
Would appreciate it if anyone can respond to this.
thanks |

Jillball ,
I'm not trying to compare other religions or religious leaders here,if you want i can do that. First of all Buddhism says to take the responsible positions but not this dirty SL politics,
First thing a monk should do is to maintain the Dhamma and maintaining non violance, are they doing it?
Tell me one responsible thing that a monk did in SL for the past 50 yrs, other influencing the communal war with JR and HWRD saying fighting with JVP and killing SWRD.
Have a you heard of Dalia Lama first of all, have you read his biography, go and do that first, if you are a true buddhist at least follow him, he went through much worse time than you guys.
Buddhism is a non violance religion, if it's true these monks should be taken out of the sanga, give some respect at least to the robe.
Pls all you buddhists if you agree with me respond this.
anizam:
To answer to your question, these so greedy monks care much about money and fame than the Buddhist Principle. That's why the buddhism strickly prohibits monks from politics.
Just see what does these MR and his crooks have done great even to sit next to the monks. Having women and booz then comming and sitting next to monks, what a disgrace!
Modayas like Jillball has no such common sense about thier own religion. Edited By - lankan71 - 5 Dec 2005 22:55:25 GMT |

Mahinda:
Respected reverends, I wish to bring to your kind -notice that there is a young man born in India who is claiming to be the reincarnation of Lord Buddha and he is in meditation for the last couple of months without food or water. Such Avatars appear every time there is excess evil on earth.
I am sure he is born to resurrect our great country which has since of late gone completely anti-Buddhist. There is anger, hatred, revenge, killing, alcohol, drugs, robbery, rape, prostitution, war, famine and many more in our chosen land of Lord Buddha. This re-incarnation is to send you all a strong message to change your ways and to guide the people in the right direction. We have totally gone anti-Buddhist in our way of life.
I hope you all will cooperate with me to reshape our way of life. First you must keep out of politics. Let there be salvation. |

Those aren't proper monks. they are just men making use of the robe.
Buddhism in this country is a blind faith for the majority of budhists. they do not understand the basics of the religion. |
