We can refine our oil needs here: Fowzie
Wednesday, 30 November 2005 - 1:17 AM SL Time

'All attempts would be made to refine oil necessary for the country`s consumption, within Sri Lanka itself,' promised Railways, Transport and Petroleum Resources Development Minister A.H.M. Fowzie yesterday.

Following a visit to the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery, the Minister added that while only 60% of the country`s oil requirements were being refined at Sapugaskanda, the rest was being imported.

`If we can refine the balance 40% here, we would be able to save the large amount of money spent on importing refined oil,' said the Minister adding that he required the cooperation of the refinery workers for this effort.

Some of the workers questioning the Minister on a Cabinet Paper approved to use part of the land belonging to the refinery to construct another privately owned refinery, asked him to give ear to their ideas too before it was approved.

Mr. Fowzie however said that the proposal had long been shelved and assured the workers that should it resurface, he would afford them the opportunity to voice their ideas.

Petrol price in SL seems to be cheaper than that of India.
How do they manage ? Indian price is higher inspite of
60% local production.

All the petroleum resources of Puttalam and Pesalai were siphoned of from down under.
There are all excuses are to distribute funds to their friends.

SINGAPORE IS ONE OF THE SMALLES COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD (250 SQ MILES). BUT THEY ARE THE THIRD LARGEST REFINERIES IN THE WORLD.

NOT ONLY THAT, THEY EVEN MANUFACTURE OIL RIGS FOR BIG OIL COMPANIES, BRINGING IN BILLIONS OF DOLLARS.

NOW WE ALSO SHOULD LOOK BEYOND REFINING OIL ONLY FOR OURSELVES. WE MUST HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO DO IT FOR THE WORLD MARKET TOO. WE DO NOT NEED MONEY, JUST INVITE THE GIANT OIL COMPANIES, THEY WILL COME AND DO IT.

LET ALL OF US WRITE THIS TO FOWZIE, I AH SURE HE WILL TAKE HEED AND AT LEAST TRY TO DO IT :)

There is no pint in wasting time preaching all these to these guys. Our Sri Lanka still lives in 19th Century, remember we still do 1956 politics in 21st century. Tell them about a way to convert GOMA in to Uria, Human waste into fertilizer. Then they will beleive you. There are 1000 of things to do in SL and can be done. As long as we have people like JVP,JHU and bunch of dinasours as our leaders we will never come out of the rut we are in. There is no point in talking about strategic advantages, Competitive advantages and productivity etc. We are a country that will never progress socially or economically untill we get rid of these dinasours. Do you think that Mahinda or any one in the Cabinet knows the few BIG words that I have out in here. What do you think DM Jayarathne knows about Telecom. For that matter any one of the Suruttu Cabinet knows about their assigned subjects. So will we progress ?. China and India are sucking in all the oil. We are in their door step. These thing should have been done long time ago. If the leaders had vision and the will things could be done easliy. But people keep choosing them.

In Sri Lanka we are talking about Crude Oil which was not found yet. But we know for sure have fish around our country.
Did any of these Politicos came up with an idea of canning fish and exporting them to international market. Idiots including our current president once who was the minister of fisheries. After all we have politicians promised rice from the Moon.

Pachche,

Machan, for that matter these fools have not even thought of becoming self sufficient in fisheries. You must be aware that SL still imports MACKERAL from South American countries. Isn't there a substitute in our seas???

Most of Sri Lankan the fish catches are exported to Europe, Canada & America. There is a very high demand for these tropical sea water fish in these countries. Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh and Thailand are some big players of this markets. There is also a heavy shortage of these fish. I heard that there are trowelers in Chilaw and they are non operational because there is no fish in the sea for these large trowelers.
Tropical sea water fish is tastier than Atlantic cold water fish. However, cold water fish contains more fish oils that is good for you. Therefore, its better to export our catches and import cheaper but healthier Atlantic fish.
