Congratulations to those who supported Mahinda!
Not being a supporter of either candidates I want to say that it is not a victory for Mahinda since it is from a very narrow margin. It is obvious that Ranil had got close to 50% of the votes. Minority Tamils of Singhalese dominated areas overwhelmingly supported Ranil and only less than 2% of Tamils of North could vote. This clearly shows that the fifth President of our country is elected by only 50% of the population without any minority support.
How could Mahinda bring peace to the country ,established democracy and minority rights we will be debating in this forum with full of speculation and controversy.
Ranil gained 48% of the country's votes and if Tamils of North could have voted freely he would have been the winner and the next President . So why did 48% trusted him? Do any body want to say 48% did not care if the country would be divided or not? The reason was that Ranil tricked LTTE with CFA because he was the Prime Minister then, in opposition to the President CBK his great rival. LTTE realized his true nature how he tried to promote Singhalese votes telling tales and his admission that he will give the Singhalese Majority to decide about the Federalism just before the election which any fool can understand will vote against. However with Mahinda it will be an easy task to convince the world that Singhalese Buddhist chauvinism will continue to play their Hegemony.
The lesson to the LTTE and the Tamil Diaspora is that neither Ranil nor Mahinda will give Federalism as LTTE wanted. However there is an opportunity to solve the ethnic conflict , Tamil rights and achieve prosperity without a war but with majority Singhalese blessings by listening to moderate Tamils like Mr. Anandasangaree. If Mahinda , UNP JVP , JHU ,LTTE and Tamil Diaspora cannot Fathom out that there is no future for Sri Lanka. |

Like one British Paper noted about the US Presidential elections last year :
'HOW CAN 4,137,525 PEOPLE BE THIS STUPID?'
---
This is a VICTORY for none other than Veluppillai Prabakaran. He got what he wanted. And he did that he couldn't face a challenger like Ranil in the negotiating table but now he has a buffalo that he is up against.
Can anyone of you true 'patriot' supporters of Rajapakse deny that if the minority voted in the NE Mahinda would have won? :) Look who proved himself the King Maker : The 'butcher of vanni' |

| I think it is about time for Ranil to face the simple fact that he is an electoral liability to the UNP. The economy is in a mess, prices rising, and of course no peace prospects, all the resposibility of the present government lead by his opponent, and he has failed. I find that this is a measure of his unacceptability as far as the electorate are concerned. It is difficult to imagine anyone in his party doing worse. |

Mahinda/JVP/JHU are not the real winners.
It is the LTTE leader who won this power game. By denying 600K votes to the American puppet Ranil, he made the JVP/JHU puppet Mahinda a king.
Let us see how the LTTE and JVP are going to play this game for the next 6 years.
May God bless Sri Lanka and its people. |

In 2004, UNP government (just over 2 years old) got defeated by UPFA while having around 70% voter turnout.
When analyzing the results of 2005 PE, UNP was able to improve their vote base in most electorates which shows the shifting of floating vote favorably towards them. (So all UNP supporters can see that as a bright sign)
However when voter turnout is around 75%, UPFA was able to defend their title though loosing majority in most of the electorates compare to last year.
Athaulla factor has not given anticipated results for Mahinda in the east and Muslims preferred Ranil over Mahinda. All other Muslim parties seems to be just passengers, making just a number as a supporting party.
Karuna could not do any thing in this election and it was only LTTE stopped Tamil votes.
Last minute Religion issue raised by UNP through church & priests, paid extra dividends for UNP. Business people who paid the advertising cost of UNP will be ultimate losers if they got them selves exposed.
Most JHU turned UNP votes (2004) have gone back to UNP fold and present JHU may have to find new options to survive in the future.

Magha,
When you talk of giving to the 'Tamils', nothing will be given, whether the request is small or big, have no doubt about that. If your analysis is true then things wouldn't have come to this unfortunate level. All these sweet talks have not produced any results so far unless it is going to happen in the future. This only made Tamils try to 'get' rather than 'receive'.
Tamils live a life of 'guesses'. So now let them guess what Mahinda is going to 'give' and when he is going to undertake his famous journey to Vanni. Hope it won't end up like JR's famous journey to Kandy.
Anyway let them wait and see what course of action he is going to initiate. Names does not mean anything. JR's DDC only by name and it did not have any substance at all. On the other hand as you suggest let Mahinda suggest a new concept, does not matter how he calls it, and see how it is going to bring the community together.
But as you have quite rightly pointed out, if there are going to be more and more tricks, then the curse will continue. Can you suggest a system by which one could determine whether it is a trick or a genuine attempt. Once bitten twice shy.
If the initiatives are genuine do you think the Tamil diaspora will go against such attempts and still support war and violence?
Out of extreme curiosity may I ask you what Mr.Sangaree is having up his sleeves that will alleviate the Tamil sufferings and how he would bring peace, prosperity and honor to the Tamils. Will he follow the same path as Kadir or he has some other magic up his sleeves awaiting to materialize from nothing?
Any way magha, this is not the right time to speculate when winners are celebrating and losers are licking their wounds. Let me and many others hope Mahinda will have the wisdom to bring in trust among all the communities and ingrain the value of mutual respect as the only prescription for salvation.
I wish him all the very best in his throne as the fifth President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

As expected two issues became evident
1) LTTE led rebel areas vote for Ranil. He may have had a another secret pat with the terrorist
2) With a Mahinda win Sri Lanka will remain a unitary state
For all those who value Sri Lanka as a unitary state it is a good result
To those who did not care it may be a bad result
For me it a very good result |
