Fingara and Lion join hands to boost cricket in Sri Lanka
Wednesday, 16 November 2005 - 1:14 AM SL Time

Fingara International Cricket Academy (Pvt) Limited has entered into an agreement with Lion Brewery of Ceylon Limited to launch a sponsorship programme to help outstanding underprivileged cricketers.

The objective of this programme is to lend a hand to the talented and outstanding cricketers, who need assistance to further their skill and also to extend support for them to rise to international level in cricket ultimately.

Under the programme, 16 such underprivileged cricketers of the under 14 age group will be coached by FICA for a period of three to five years and their coaching fees and clothing will be borne by LBCL. Deserving students, who are to be sponsored by LBCL, will be selected by Tony Opatha, Executive Director, FICA. These cricketers will be selected after a test and will be trained twice a week for two hours by FICA coaches. LBCL will be spending for each child during the sponsorship period of five years.

School principals from all parts of the island have been requested to nominate three outstanding eligible students from their schools (under 14 teams) to be considered for this sponsorship and many schools have already responded to this request and their nominees have been already summoned for trials which commenced on October 29. The final selection of students will be done by a panel comprising Duleep Mendis, Chief Executive Officer, Sri Lanka Cricket, Anura Tennakoon, former captain of Sri Lanka and Tony Opatha, Executive Director of FICA.

Manjuka Prasantha, Head of Regular Category signed the agreement on behalf of Lion Brewery of Ceylon Ltd. and Tony Opatha, Executive Director signed on behalf of Fingara International Cricket Academy, on Monday.

In the light of the current scientific knowledge regarding factors affecting alcohol consumption, I would like to pose a single question to you, Messrs. Prasantha, Opatha and Rahaman: Do you honestly believe this project and also the publicity it received are not part of a mammoth but subtle alcohol promotion scheme?
