The controversial Norochcholai power project has been thrown into three-phased confusion. President Chandrika Kumaratunga though in the last days of her presidency has given orders for the Ceylon Electricity Board to go ahead with the project.
But both main presidential candidates Mahinda Rajapakse and Ranil Wickremesinghe have pledged they would review the project before taking a decision.
Prime Minister Rajapakse has assured the Catholic Bishop of Chilaw and the Muslim community that he would not allow the project until a full reassessment is made.
Mr. Wickremesinghe has said he will appoint a committee to review the project. Chilaw`s Catholic Bishop, Frank Marcus Fernando, leading the opposition to the project, issued a tough statement criticizing the President for wanting to go ahead with the project despite all the protests.
After several years of controversy, the President during her recent visit to China finalized the deal on the Norochcholai project with her advisor and business tycoon Harry Jayawardena playing a major role.

This project will not get underway under any president. Sri Lankans can only have presidents with no backbone or decency (like themselves).
CEB has to look for another place or alternate sources of power. |

| Every alternative power scheme will suffer the same consequences. There is no other option than making power 'Mudalalis' rich with public money. Aren't we good at looking after the welfare of rich people as a nation? |

This is a Tragedy. This in fact shows the true nature of our leaders. They just want to please the public for few more votes. First, Japs came to fund this project to withdrew them later knowing SL leaders are never going to implement this. Then Chinese came forward with funds and soon they too will withdraw it. I really want to know what Ranil has to say about this, provided his willingness to accept foreign funds irrespective of what the conditions behind.
Seemingly, Ranil is ready to give part of the country away for the funds promised at the latest donor conference. But not ready to give away few hundreds of votes away for some other funds which can effectively solve the power crisis in SL to a great extent.

May be it is time to ask ourselves why the Japanese, Chinese and other foreigners are seeking to invest in Sri Lanka? Our minds must meet first, before money is committed or it must be a humnitarian project
