Karuna split weakens LTTE hold - UTHR (J)

In its latest report, the University Teachers for Human Rights (Jaffna), (UTHR (J) has observed that the LTTE had total control of the northern and eastern provinces until the Karuna split.
The report said: `If the peace process has degenerated into a killing spree, averaging more than one a day in early October, it is because there were no working institutional mechanisms to safeguard civilian interests and ensure that they remain primary. The LTTE had an agenda of monopoly control over the North-East, and its monopoly over killings was countenanced until the Karuna split. The manner in which the split was handled took no account of civilian interests. On Norway`s prompting the LTTE`s main faction was given a virtual free hand to crush the Karuna faction, conscript children and kill with impunity. The State while formally agreeing to Norway`s wishes could not resist winking at sections of the security apparatus covertly supporting Karuna. For the people of the East it was the worst of all worlds with several predators, including the State, and no protectors.
While the LTTE, harried and militarily challenged by the Karuna faction, remained responsible for most killings of civilians in the East, the pattern became hazier. This will be evident in the cases below. In a bid to bring the crisis to a head, hoping that the international community would intervene in its favour, the LTTE intensified provocations against the security forces targeting soldiers and policemen. A high point was the killing of SSP Charles Wijewardene in Jaffna in late July and the killing of the Foreign Minister two weeks later. The security forces did not respond overtly, but the LTTE was determined to raise the stakes.
In early September, the LTTE withdrew its open presence from government held areas, including Jaffna and its intelligence wing increased its covert presence and maintained a tighter grip on the populace.
The murders of the two respected school principals, Nadaraja Sivakadatcham and Kanapathy Rajadeerai were seen initially as tit for tat murders. However, after they ceased to be news, they were seen as the work of the LTTE.
Uninhibited killing by the LTTE is founded in their total insistence that they are the sole representatives of the Tamil people, with a monopoly over violence, which they feel free to inflict on all whom they regard as traitors.
Principal targets for elimination are those suspected of having had connection with the EPDP, the army or those perceived to be double agents. Even the selling of vegetables, liqour, hiring out vehicles, any act of friendship or passing an information is treated as an act of treachery.
`Everyone knows how we punish treachery. We warn such offenders firmly and finally.` News items signifying killings of opponents was frequently accompanied by the photograph of a menacing-looking revolver, whose barrel stared at the reader.
When a person killed is associated with the LTTE, the photograph shown is a good one with the corpse dressed with solemnity. Victims of the LTTE are shown in a gory manner with gaping wounds and congealed blood spreading on shirt from punctured chest.
Both these come from psychological impulses that the LTTE cannot resist. To LTTE supporters it gives an exhilarating sense of power over their adversaries, which also loosens the purse strings of expatriate devotees. The message is clear `That is what you deserve and that is what you got.`
The revolver plays the same role telling them `There is no escape for you. We always get our man`. An attempt by a kachcheri official to get his transfer to an LTTE controlled areas deferred attracted a severe warning from the LTTE. It was within the LTTE`s programme to appropriate government administration. It already controlled the Kachcheri and could dictate transfers and get lower level official moved around, monitored and ensure they work the way that they wants them to.
All those killed around Vavuniya, were connected to PLOTE, EPDP or EPRLF. Their families lived under acute intimidation of the LTTE and had to carry out instructions from the LTTE because `whoever wished to live must understand that there is only one who must be obeyed. The stakes are too high.
Immediately after the killings, of Rajadurai and Sivakadatcham, a spontaneous protest was seen, headed by the students and the local community. In this instance the LTTE was unable to contain the protests nor were they able to penetrate a road block of protesting students while an army convey was allowed to pass through the blockade. This infuriated the LTTE who resorted to a new kind of intelligence where masked men on motorcycles began assaulting persons gathered on roadsides and chasing them. This lasted several days.
The LTTE is organisationally weak and dependent on killers from its intelligence wing to maintain control within and without. Yet it holds governments and millions of Tamils to ransom. Although it has nothing to offer in the way of stability or prosperity, its strength is that it articulates a common perception shored by most Tamils, the obduracy and unreasonableness of the Sri Lanka state and the Sinhalese polity.`

Xpuli,
Can you please tell me what are the intentions of anyone who is accepting LTTE as the sole representative of Tamils?
,and then how would ordinary Tamils respond to those groups?

You may call these people bastards (it's your opinion), they may be paid by the government, but brother I don't think they are spineless, you have to have a good spine to stand against a ruthless bunch like LTTE even for money.
One question, I'm asking because I don't know, Where is TRO registered? |

Thanks, I think most of all those people are the well wishers of the destruction of Tamils than anything else.
And Recently, I found that JR actually succeeded with his plan. 1983 riots were meant to attract ordinary Tamils toward the JR regime seeking refuge in fear of communists and Marxists, who were accused (by JR) of inciting violence against ordinary Tamils. However, LTTE reaped much of the benefits out of it. But hasn't it paved the way to JR's nephew? Hasn't he attracted Tamil votes, even after holding office in a government which failed to protect Tamils in Colombo, 22 years ago. Karuna, UTHR are ex-LTTE, Ranil is pro-LTTE, it is complex enough but also very simple at the same time. It is a time bomb!
If they don't think and act accordingly, I think ordinary Tamils will have to do what you've suggested sooner than later.

This UTHR(J) is a very interesting organization, in fact a unique organization. There is not a single member of the Jaffna academic staff in this organization, no one knows where on earth this is located (believed to be in a 5-star hotel in Colombo funded by the government)and apparently run by one man, a one-man-show. This one-man was one time member of the academic staff of the Jaffna university. His information is hearsay basically and paid to do this job.
Karuna reminds me of Kamal Brothers, the infamous sons-in-law of Sadam Husain. These two blokes were brothers and were married to two daughters of Sadam. The elder fellow in particular was a minister and a very powerful guy and was a ruthless murderer. He was responsible for the slaughtering of thousands of its citizens. He was more ruthless than sadam himself.
Then he lost his head and thought he is all almighty. The foolish perception misled him and he planned to dislodge Sadam, his father-in-law, and to capture power. He and his brother along with their wifes (Sadams daughters)ran to Jordan and started sabotaging Sadam's regime. He let out so many top secrets, especially about the hidden weapons to the UN Arms Inspectors. He also tried to make contacts with the west to dislodge Sadam. But the west was aware of this guy's misdeeds and kept away from him but extracted whatever they needed.
This fellow's greed for power led to this action to dislodge Sadam and not for the sake of the people. In fact Iraqi's knew he would be worse than Sadam. But he did not have the brains and the mental acumen, typical of such cut throats.
After 6 months he was duped to come back to Iraq and Sadam gave him total pardon. When both Kamal brothers and their wifes entered Iraq, at the Jordan Iraq border itself they were arrested, on the following day they were made to divorce their wifes, and on the following day both of them were shot and killed.
They got what they deserved. These two never had any intention to improve the quality of life in Iraq but to capture power and to have a more ruthless regime to enjoy power and wealth.
So in olden history or modern history, there is no shortage for such cut throats whose greed and temptation influenced by mischief makers push them to do various things that finally proves to be a disaster for all.
People who accept LTTE may be idiots but people who promote cut throats and idiots are not only morons but owing to their inability to think logically drive the entire race to the grave yard. These guys are similar to the ill informed fools who went along with Kamal brothers to Jordan, but they had little more common sense not to return to Iraq.. |

A good one and interesting, lot to learn there
-This is what will happen to everyone who runs after other countries (UN, USA, NORWAY etc.etc.) to solve their own problems.
-And it's a good example what will happen to people who think they are almighty.
-And this is a lesson for the people who betrays dictatorship and returns
Finally, I think Karuna didn't make the mistake these Kamal brothers made by returning.
Well written. This should go in to the Karuna's file and Velu's file as a note of reference.
Show this to Kumar Rupasinghe and then try to publish it in a reputed journal. |

Vishnu, It is too early to say. We have to wait and see what Karuna will do?
We can't go by the recently declared 'academics' who are predicitng the future. It is much more complicated than what they think. Probably they will learn with experience and interacting with people.
I cannot understand the relationship between the support for LTTE and the knowledge about brothel. Prostitutes and pimps are better than people who try to undercut their own kind.

Can some one who was a lecturer in Jaffna university up to 1987 and now living in Colombo claim them self as activist of Jaffna University Teachers?
Is that not cheating the national and international community?
Now no one heeds their reports other than Sinhalese chauvinist.
UN agencies and AI are doing good work in South and North east to improve human rights with out colonialism . I agree with them in most of the issues.

Section of the armed forces is planing to destabilize east in order to prevent Tamils and Muslims voting for Ranil. UTHCR by issuing these political report to preparing ground for that. UTHCR earlier in 1990's released misleading reports claiming no support for LTTE in order to prepare ground for the so called 'war for peace' and 'Jayasukrai'. Both made LTTE strong.
Now they are encouraging Sinhalese hard liners to start the last war by electing Mahinda.
