I ask the same question as Tigeress19. I did get the feeling during my recent stay in Sri Lanka, that in some quarters the government was trying to 'dump' money.
Based on merit, the Thiruchendur Murugan Temple at Batticaloa ought to have received its Reconstruction funds by now. But they have not. Politicians and Royalty received their share of publicity out of the pain of the Thiruchendur Murugan community. The people are still hurting from the pain and loss. I spoke to them and felt for them.
Unless the government has a clear system of allocating funds for special projects, one would be led to believe that Tsunami funds are at risk, with or without the government knowing about it. The government has a responsibility to publish periodial statements about the state of the Tsunami funds.

The JVP unions have been the most irresponsible lot since Independence.Like the political party the union is affiliated to, they are a destructive force. This is clearly seen in the JVP activists in the universities and the attempt even to infiltrate the schools. The JVP unions have been sabotaging the Govt by wild strikes even when they are part of the Govt. The hypocrisy is demonstrated by the fact that during the period the JVP supported the Govt there has been several privatization but now they go around the country screaming that Ranil and the UNP will hand over the country to multi-nationals.
The only means of bringing changes after Ranil wins the election would be to neutralize the JVP in the same Manner JRJ dealt with the July strikers in 1980. |

Obsessions can make and break a person.
Some have serene obsessions.
Some have violent obsessions.
Some are offensive
Some are defensive
Obsessions also take you to a world in Obscurity.

One refinery means thousands jobs for the people. Hundreds jobs for professionals. TUs can not just simply object to this. We have to think both pros and cons of the project. TUs too turned into this stage due to the irresponsible actions taken by the politicians in recenet history. During last 2 years UNP regim, Milinda and group destroyed the CPC just for their own benefts. So, the TUs are suspicious of the any action taken by the government. This should be negotiated with the TUs and the project to be materialized for betterment of the Country.

That is good. Before we find oil install refineries!
Hope the refinery's byproduct LPG will not be burnt as it is in Sapugaskanda now. Due to agreements between foreign companies, Sapugaskanda refinery burn LPG otherwise which could have utilized to reduce the cost of LPG in Sri Lanka. |

It is better to have private enterprises compared to govt corporations where corruptions are rampant and always the govt corporation lose money.
TRade unions should understand they are becoming thing of the past. They built a different class on their own.
This petroluem corporation gives SL the very much needed refining capacity and cheap oil (very inlikely).
Besides, US needs to show their presence, when CHINA is building petroleum reserves on its way from middel east to China.
Besides everything, who will provide fuel for the american ships, if middle east oil is obstructed for some reason by AL Qaida.
But this is business that SL needed very much.

Thank you AnuD for appreciating my economic bias.
I do believe that we need to use the economic basis to implement democratic systems in Sri Lanka where people tend to overrate their 'spritual' and religious credits. I however believe that economic development must come with genuine work for it to last.
sk63 says in another part of this forum that it is not the government that has control over business in Sri Lanka. Most funds do come through the government and hence anyone in favour with the government does have easier access to the common funds than those who are seen to be against the government.
It is important to invest in common enterprise but without strong systems, they would lead to war, because the government will have more money for weapons without us knowing aout it.
Why is the government not publishing figures regarding Tsunami expenditure. Transparency and accountability are the key features of demcratic systems.
