Kingswood lift President`s Trophy to set unique record
Sunday, 16 October 2005 - 2:08 AM SL Time

The much hyped final between Kingswood College and St. Peter`s College proved to be an anti-climax, as the former won 23-3 without breaking sweat in a lop-sided tie.

The game became interesting purely due to three superbly executed tries scored by the winners as the losers struggled to make their presence felt on the day.

The defending champions Kingswood College opened up a sizeable 18-3 half time lead to turn the game into a no contest, as the Peterite followers despite shouting themselves hoarse had nothing to crow about in the end.

Despite the Peterites containing the champions in the second 30 minutes, they came up against a water-tight defence from the opposition, and surrendered meekly in the end.

The title holders played like champions with their forward pack and outside backs clicking into gear at the right time, having earlier struggled to beat Wesley (9-6) in extra time of the semi-final and Thurstan (26-13) in the quarter finals respectively.

But when it came to the grand finale there was no letting up on the part of the lads from Kandy, and they brushed aside St. Peter`s claims to be worthy finalists with a fine performance of running rugby.

Success owed to No 8 and scrum half

The title favourites owed the success in the final to two of their fast rising stars, number eight Navin Wijethunge and diminutive scrum half Heshan Premarathne.

Wijethunge, a hefty loose-forward, used his burly frame to open gaping holes in the opposition defence, while Premarathne with his electric runs at the breakdown kept the Petes at bay.

It was Premarathne himself who scored Kingswood`s first try joining a three quarter move from a third phase move, to fox the opponents by sneaking through mid right.

Sparked by the scrum half`s superb try, Kingswood took the cue from him to grab another try this time to back-row forward Wijethunge.

The dusky number eight, set to lead the team in 2006, made a powerful mid field break leaving a few Peterite defenders for dead with his trademark hand-offs, to go under the posts for a morale boosting try.

With skipper Eranda Weerakkodi from the last line of defence firing in the conversions and penalties, Kingswood took a firm grip of the Trophy, before outside half Dev Anand kicked a beautiful 25 metre drop to ensure the final will not go into extra time.

Following the turn around, St. Peter`s threw everything they had at Kingswood but still came unstuck as they failed to penetrate the rock solid defence of the League champions.

Ten minutes into the second half, lock Nuwan Bandara scored the third and last try from another surging break made by Wijethunge.

Despite the Peterites pressing hard to gain a consolation five pointer in the last 15 minutes, they never had a genuine chance of overcoming the challenge posed by Kingswood on the day.

Aimless kicks and too many hits

St. Peter`s from the way they played gave the impression they never had a game plan to counter the opponents in the final, and paid the price for indulgence in senseless rugby.

On more than one occasion the Peterites, when in possession, threw it away either by aimlessly kicking into the opposition territory or by going into too many hits by the forwards.

St. Peter`s obviously had their strength based on the forward pack, and when up against an equally solid pack of the rivals they had to resort to find ways of coming on top of them.

But on this day the Petes think tank bereft of ideas failed to act accordingly and allowed the defending champions to dictate terms as they wished.

The triumph on October 8 (Saturday) at the Sugathadasa Stadium in the Milo President`s Trophy final, also marked the third successive season Kingswood had retained the title in a sequence which had its origins in 2003.

They have also defended the League Trophy successfully in the same period, meaning remaining unbeaten for three completed school seasons ' a unique record whichever way one looks at it.

Principal, coach and physical trainer to the fore

At this moment during Kingswood`s hour of glory, it is only prudent to mention the contributions of three individuals who have played their part from behind the scenes to make Kingswood the undisputed kings of schools rugby.

Those three men are principal, Ranjith Chandrasekera, coach Ronnie Ibrahim and physical trainer Mothilal Jayathileke.

Chandrasekera has been a key figure as school head, being present at all matches looking into the needs of his squad in the past three years.

He is a keen school rugby follower and no doubt his contribution from the top along with the Old Boys Association (OBA) has been critical to their unprecedented run in that period.

Ibrahim is one of the most, if not the most, enviable school rugby coach.

This amiable character has taken great pains to mould champion outfits for three consecutive years and the 2005 season was no exception as his charges lived up to their top billing.

In fact since the day he first started to train the Kingswood first XV rugby team his school have not lost a game yet, in a remarkable run unmatched in the annals of domestic schools rugby.

Jayathileke has proved his prowess as a physical trainer attached to the Kandy school and such is the impact made by the former Sri Lanka power lifter that numerous other schools sought his services during the just concluded rugby season.

Rugbylover,
Take it easy buddy. Malsh*t is showing his class by posting these. He says he's HIGH CLASS TAMIL. I don't know whether he got a tag attached to his body or some kind of marking saying that he's HIGH CLASS TAMIL.
Sad that I don't have much time to write some good things about this bugger.
selawalawe told some things about his birth some time ago, really nice.

Aliciavasthu: Sellawallawe has apoligised to me, have you read it.

If not find it & read it.

My exsistence on this planet, is dependent on the good things you write about me.

True man true, till you do, I will not make any progress in life.

Keep shatting, keep on shat-ting.
