Send us a barber!, say stranded Sri Lankan tsunami survivors
Sunday, 30 January 2005 - 10:14 PM SL Time

COLOMBO (AFP) - Tsunami victims stranded in a remote part of eastern Sri Lanka had one urgent request when a team of Tamil Tiger rebels reached them last week after travelling days through the jungle -- send a barber.

A report on the Tamilnet website said the group of Muslims in the Ullai-Panama region, which has been cut off since bridges were washed away by the December 26 tsunami, were relieved to see the team of Tigers.

Aside from asking for regular medical assistance, the survivors said they need the services of a barber as none were left in the area after the tsunami wreaked its havoc.

The survivors, staying at a welfare centre in the remote village of Aathimunai, which is surrounded by marshland, told the rebels their longer-term need was for new housing.

For now, however, they would settle for someone who can cut their hair.

According to latest official estimates, 30,959 people were killed in Sri Lanka by the December 26 tsunamis while about half a million are still homeless
