A Matara District UNP MP and former PA heavyweight has personally sought the release of imprisoned UNP front-liner S.B. Dissanayake on Independence Day.
Mahinda Wijesekera in a handwritten appeal faxed to President Chandrika Kumaratunga has sought the release of Mr. Dissanayake on February 4, 2005.
The appeal stated that in view of the President`s appeal to unite, leaving all political difference aside to face the national disaster of December 26 2004, Mr. Dissanayake`s release would help the cause.
The appeal also stated that the opinion expressed by S.B. Dissanayake for which he was accused were that of his party and its voters. The speech delivered away from Colombo in a distant place did not have any impact either on judges or the Judiciary and his speech did not stand in the way of the dissolution of parliament.
Civil society viewed the scenario not as legally justifiable but expedited by political considerations, the appeal stated.
`An opportunity has been offered on the Independence Day after the tsunami to prove that it is not so. Hence, I respectfully request you to order the release of S.B. Dissanayake on February 4 2005 irrespective of political or personal differences,` Mr. Wijesekera had requested the President.
