S.Lanka shuts rebel border amid violence fears

Sri Lanka`s army closed off entry points to areas controlled by Tamil Tiger rebels on Thursday for the first day since a 2002 ceasefire after Red Cross officials said they feared for their safety amid sporadic violence.

The surprise move left up to 25,000 people stranded at a border separating government-controlled areas from land held by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

Pro-rebel protesters burned tyres along the Indian Ocean island`s main north-south highway.

Tensions are running high between the majority Sinhalese and minority Tamils in the north and east after the rebel group paid annual homage to fallen comrades at the weekend. Police have imposed curfews in the restive east. Full Story


Sri Lanka says LTTE`s unilateral insistence on single peace agenda is unfair

Dec 02, Colombo: Reacting to the LTTE leader`s Heroes` Day statement, the Sri Lankan government yesterday said unilateral insistence on a single agenda item is `scarcely conducive to good-faith negotiations.`

The government said it is ready to discuss the establishment of an interim authority to meet the urgent humanitarian and development needs of the country?s North and East. But it said peace talks should also involve ?exploring a permanent settlement? along the lines of a federal solution. Full Story


LTTE call scarcely conducive to good faith negotiations

The Government responding to the statement made by the LTTE leader on November 27 observed that a call couched in threatening language from the LTTE for a resumption of negotiations without conditions, while setting conditions itself by insisting unilaterally on a single agenda item is scarcely conducive to good faith negotiations.

Trinco pretty quiet

Police yesterday reported Trincomalee was quiet following Monday`s grenade blast which killed a bus passenger and injured three others.

Eastern Province North DIG Neville Wijesinghe told the Daily News yesterday that the Police curfew imposed on Monday night was lifted yesterday morning with no major incidents reported overnight.

`The security in the area was stepped up with the assistance of the Army and Navy to prevent any outbreak of violence,` the DIG said. Police also have deployed additional troops in the area, the DIG said.

Curfew re-imposed in Trincomalee

Speaking to religious leaders of all faiths and civil leaders representing all communities in Trincomalee town Rear Admiral Sandagiri said ?this is not a time to give into emotions.?

Daya Sandagiri accompanied by Army Commander Shantha Kottegoada arrived on Monday in troubled Trincomalee after tension heightened between the Sinhala and Tamil communities.

The police have decided to declare curfew again on Tuesday after a number of sporadic incidents of violence.

The statement was issued as a Response to the LTTE leader`s Heroes` Day speech which cautioned the Sri Lanka government on the concerns of the Tamil Tigers about the stagnation of the peace talks.

`Following their election to office this year, the UPFA Government has made serious, sincere and consistent efforts to reopen talks with the LTTE, and the Government recognises that there has been an absence of direct negotiations since April 2003,` says the government statement. Full Story

LTTE wants to disturb normalcy in Jaffna - Army

Nov 22, Colombo: Army Headquarters yesterday said the LTTE instigated a deliberate attempt to provoke Security Forces and disrupt normalcy in the Jaffna peninsula following the murder of two innocent Tamil youth in Velvetithurai.

Protests launched by LTTE-backed groups censored down stores and transportation services over the weekend. The LTTE meanwhile accused Security Forces for the deaths, Army Spokesperson Brigadier Daya Ratnayake said.

LTTE hit squad nabbed near Parliament

Justice Ambepitiya was a fearless and upright Judge

The late Justice Sarath Ambepitiya was a courageous Judicial officer who sacrificed his life in the course of discharging his duties as a fearless and upright judge in Sri Lanka`s judiciary, said President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in a message to Vajira Ambepitiya, widow of the late Justice Ambepitiya.

The President`s message yesterday read at the funeral by Justice Minister John Seneviratne stated that the demise of Justice Ambepitiya was a blow to the independence of the judiciary. Members of the Judiciary could not be intimidated by cowardly acts of this nature.

Rs.2750 million for Jana Pubuduwa, Gam Pubuduwa

The Government has allocated Rs.2750 million to implement the Jana Pubuduwa and Gam Pubuduwa programs next year under the new development drive titled Suwahas Jana Pubuduwa launched recently by the Samurdhi and Poverty Alleviation Ministry to uplift the socio-economic conditions of low income groups.

These two programs are an integral part of the Sanwardhana Sangramaya initiated by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

Under the Jana Pubuduwa programme, 100,000 Samurdhi beneficiary families and other low income families will be economically empowered during 2005 by introducing self employment ventures in agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, sales, industries and other services to augment their income levels, Samurdhi and Poverty Alleviation Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi told the Daily News.

Verdict reserved on woman`s death

A 53 year old woman who was operated on at the Colombo National Hospital on four occasions to remove a stone in the stomach came by her death, allegedly due to leakage of electricity from a surgical instrument used in the operation.

This was revealed at the inquest held in respect of the death of Sammuth Husena Kaleel of Jinthupitiya, Kotahena, who was warded in Ward No. 63 of the Colombo National Hospital with a history of a stone in the stomach.
