What's so unique about this news site?

     This Sri Lankan news website is completely generated through a computer algorithm.
     We have zero staff working on this. Its all automated by using the Kapruka news generator program (KNG).

Word from the developer
Kapruka news generator (KNG) engine was written using some underlying concepts of s-mail and an intelligent HTML parser written by me.
Here's KNG's process cycle.

1. Visits a news website (ie, dailynews.lk)

2. Recognize headlines and paragraphs (KNG does a lot of intelligent guess work here to do this) and saves that information to our local database with a date stamp.

3. Recognize cover page images and create thumbnails out of them.

4. In case of a Sinhala news source, render sinhala text into GIF image format using Kapruka s-mail API.

5. Generate the HTML code using the data we collected in steps 1-4. KNG repeats this cycle every 30 seconds.

Challenges I faced while developing KNG:
  • Recognizing Headlines and Text paragraphs out of websites that doesn't use consistent templates. This was the toughest part of the job. I use Color, font Size, Font size relativity to rest of the page and CSS font attributes to make intelligent guesses here.
  • Converting Sinhala text into GIF Images. I used parts of my sinhala e-mail client (http://www.lanka.info) to render sinhala text into GIF
    images.

  • Re-scaling front page images of news papers Java 2D API was helpful to me to archive this. Here I dynamically select the best format to show the image as. (ie..GIF or JPEG).

We clearly show the original news source with every headline. We divert all our readers to the original news site if they wish to read the full story. News websites benefits by receiving this traffic. We encourage Sinhala News readers to install Sinhala fonts by showing them headlines without the need for any special fonts. Sinhala news sources (ie..divaina.com, lakbima.com) benefits from this. We have a high rank in google and other popular search engines. Our links to any website will boost up their page ranks.
